Suspension Bridge turns blue for one night only
The Clifton Suspension Bridge has been lit up in a technicolour light show for one night only.
Usually only illuminated with white LEDs strung across the chains, additional specialist lighting equipment was moved onto the site on Friday evening for the Light the Night event.
It was part of the national Support Our Museums initiative run by the Museums Association, which raised more than £13,000 for the Clifton Suspension Bridge trust from people and businesses, who donated and and also voted to illuminate Brunel’s famous bridge.
is needed now More than ever
Laura Hilton, visitor centre manager at the bridge, said: “The visitor centre is part of the Clifton Suspension Bridge Charitable Trust and is usually reliant on income from visitor donations, shop sales and tours.
“When we closed the venue in March 2020, we lost all of these revenue sources and had to think creatively about fundraising.
“The campaign not only helped us to fund core work behind the scenes during the lockdowns, but our team can finally spread a giant smile across the city!”

“Illuminations have always played a significant role in the enjoyment of the Clifton Suspension Bridge,” said Chris Booy, chair of trustees at the Clifton Suspension Bridge trust
“As part of the opening ceremony on December 8, 1864, the bridge was illuminated using state-of-the-art electric lighting, limelight, and magnesium lighting.
“With Light the Night, our intention is to create a special moment to surprise and delight the people of Bristol.”
