Community campaign saves much-loved swimming pool

By Ellie Pipe  Wednesday Jun 15, 2022

Efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers in and around Knowle have finally succeeded in securing the future of Jubilee Pool.

The much-loved art deco facility has faced numerous threats of closure over the last few years, with owners Bristol City Council citing increasing running costs as a key reason.

But each time, residents rallied to save the pool that has been a part of the community for 85 years.

They have now managed to stave off any more closure threats and secure its long-term future by negotiating a community asset transfer to put the pool firmly in the hands of the people of Knowle.

The Friends of Jubilee Pool group will take over control of running the facility from current operators Parkwood on September 30 this year.

Volunteers say that there is still a lot of work to do to finalise details before then but that “the future of Jubilee Pool has never looked more exciting”.

Announcing the community asset transfer news, the Friends of Jubilee Pool group said: “This is an amazing achievement, that has taken a huge amount of work from a dedicated team of volunteers.

“Our thanks go out to Bristol City Council, Jubilee’s amazing community, the staff at Parkwood Leisure, all those organisations and individuals who participated in our community consultation or provided pro bono support and Locality, Sport England and City Funds for their advice and guidance. We would also like to show our appreciation for Quartet Community Foundation, The John James Bristol Foundation and The Society for Merchant Venturers for supporting our efforts through their grant funding. We couldn’t have done this without you all.”
