Concern over Carriageworks redevlopment plan
Plans to redevelop one of Bristol’s worst eyesores have been revealed.
The Carriageworks and Westmoreland House in Stokes Croft have stood derelict for three decades.
A planning application to renovate the listed Carriageworks, demolish Westmoreland House and No.4 Ashley Road was submitted to Bristol City Council in November.

Last night developers Fifth Capital and John Assael, from Assael Architects, presented the plans to local residents.
118 new homes are proposed and a new community and commercial space on the ground floor, which faces onto Stokes Croft and Ashley Road. A spokesman for Fifth Capital said although the scheme includes two new public spaces and a pedestrian route through the site, this space will need to be “carefully managed to avoid problems with anti-social behaviour, but it will not be a gated development.’
However, Lori Streich, chair of the Carriageworks Action Group (CAG) said they have real concerns over the plans.
Marc Pennick, director of Fifth Capital London, said they were trying to “strike a balance between the planning rules, the Carriageworks Community Vision, and creating a commercially viable scheme that can actually be built.”
Fifth Capital said it hoped plans would come before the city council’s cabinet in March and work start on the project at the end of the yeat.
