By Bristol24/7  Monday Aug 15, 2016

Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a car in the centre of Bristol on Sunday afternoon.

The VW Golf was parked illegally outside Bridewell police station.

Police closed parts of several roads surrounding the police station including Bridewell Street, Nelson Street, Silver Street, Union Street, Rupert Street and Haymarket, as well as Rupert Street car park.

Roads were closed as the army was brought in

After army experts carried out controlled explosions on the car to gain entry, it was examined and not found to pose a threat. Police are now looking to trace its owner.

Avon and Somerset Police chief superintendent Jon Reilly said: “The decision to close the roads was not taken lightly and I’d like to thank the public and local traders for their patience and support while we dealt with the matter.

“We take all suspicious incidents seriously and will take all the precautions necessary to ensure the public are safe and feel safe.”
