Coronavirus live updates: June 1 2020

Children in Reception, Years 1 and 6 are able to return to school today, but many teachers and parents remain wary that restrictions have been lifted too early.

Also today, lockdown measures are being eased with groups of six people now allowed to meet outside.

A memorial garden is being built at Westerleigh Crematorium  for people to remember and honour loved ones who they have lost during the Covid-19 pandemic. The focal point of the landscaped garden will be a stone memorial.

The Watershed has lost nearly half of its income to coronavirus.

In an interview with BBC News, chief exec Clare Reddington said: “We’re predicting extremely conservative numbers from now until the end of the financial year. That will put us in a really difficult financial position and will eat up the reserves that we’ve spent 20 years building up. The short term picture is difficult but not catastrophic, but towards the end of the financial year we would start to reach the end of our reserves and start to be facing problems.”

• Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire has reminded parents that “there is no requirement to take children back (to primary school) if you, children or school aren’t ready”. She tweeted: “I know some children have been at school all along, other parents not keen to get back and some not ready. It’s important to be safe and child-focussed. Some schools can do social distancing and other measures and for others it is really tricky. Hence need for a specific and careful approach.”
• Bristol Flyers’ season is now officially over following the British Basketball League confirming the cancellation of the 2019/20 campaign, but Bristol City are set to resume their season later this month.
• A Black Lives Matter march is due to take place in Bristol on Thursday. The march is scheduled to start at 12.30pm from Eastville Park and work its way through the city, finishing on College Green.
