Cotham Hill pedestrianisation pilot made permanent
A temporary pedestrianisation scheme on Cotham Hill has been made permanent.
Sections of the road are now completely closed to motor vehicles, with the aim of the scheme to create a pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly environment.
Restaurants and cafes have space for outdoor trading, but there remains some consternation that the completion of the work has not coincided with the summer to enable the hopsitality businesses to best make use of outdoor seating.

Since it started in June, construction work on Cotham Hill has included improving pedestrian crossings, widening some pavements and resurfacing.
Work has not yet finished but the council say that the £645,000 scheme – funded by the Department for Transport through its Active Travel Fund – is now “materially complete”.
Finishing touches still to be made include installing bins and cycle stands, and a small section of cycle lane between Woodland Road and Hampton Road.

Cabinet member for transport, Don Alexander, said: “This project shows our commitment to sustainable travel, and I am delighted construction work is complete in time for Christmas.
“By permanently closing some sections of the road to traffic, we have created a safer and more accessible environment for everyone while supporting local businesses to use outdoor space.”
Alexander said that the pedestrianisation of Cotham Hill “aligns with our broader vision to promote active travel, manage traffic sustainably, and enhance the overall quality of life of our residents”, with other pedestrianisation schemes in the Old City and on Princess Victoria Street in Clifton Village also both set to be made permanent.
