Could top floor of car park be transformed into rooftop bar?

By Maddie Clarke-Newell  Saturday Aug 6, 2022

It has unrivalled views across Bristol and now hundreds of people are calling for “a wasted space” to be transformed into a rooftop bar.

More than 600 people have signed a petition calling for the top floor of Trenchard Street car park to be turned into a bar and street food venue during the summer.

The owners of the Crafty Egg say they have been working on making this vision a reality for nearly five years and came close to achieving their goal in the summer of 2020 but were never able to progress things further.

Now they are mobilising public support for the idea to transform the top tier of the multi-storey car park just off Trenchard Street into a rooftop bar, food outlet and entertainment space.

“Forward thinking cities across the world have upcycled these concrete tower blocks into thriving rooftop spaces,” say the Crafty Egg team.

“We don’t think 4X4s and other polluters of the city should be the only ones to benefit from this amazing outlook.”

The team say they did extensive research into the idea, organising suppliers, infrastructure and more – even considering reserving a space for skaters – in 2020 but were unable to get the council agreement to get things off the ground.

They are hopeful of bringing the vision to fruition next summer.

The project could emulate the likes of Bold Tendencies in Peckham, a not-for-profit organisation based in the rooftop spaces of a multi-storey carpark.

The petition states: “The top deck of Trenchard Street car park is a wasted space – an untapped resource that Bristol needs to start using to its full potential.

“Boasting unparalleled views of Bristol, it is crying out to be a summer time venue. Art installations and local food and drinks are the vision. It has potential to be the place to be for Bristolians and tourists to enjoy. It is currently well under capacity and ripe for a change of use.

“We need people power on this. We need every department within Bristol City Council onboard and pushing to make this a reality.”
