New series of The Crystal Maze to be filmed in Bristol

By Kate Wyver  Friday Jan 13, 2017

The long-awaited new series of The Crystal Maze will be filmed in a former bottling plant in Hengrove.

A 30,000 square foot set is being built at The Bottle Yard Studios, which was previously the home of Deal or No Deal and has also hosted television shows including Sherlock and Trollied.

The original Crystal Maze designer James Dillon will be creating the new set, which will be broadcast on Channel 4 in 20 hour-long episodes presented by Richard Ayoade.

RDF Televison director of production Jane Wilson said: “The scale, atmosphere and versatility of the space perfectly compliment the iconic status of the original show.

“The Bottle Yard’s unique features and the actual fabric of the building itself will be incorporated into a fantastic new set. Clearly we were made for each other.”

Originally airing in the 1990s, The Crystal Maze returned to television in October 2016 for a one-off charity celebrity special hosted by Hanham’s Stephen Merchant.

Ayoade follows in the footsteps of Richard O’Brien, the host from 1990 to 1995 who also wrote The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

A Crystal Maze experience opened last year in London, with teams competing in the traditional Aztec, Industrial, Futuristic and Medieval zones.

Producers in Bristol are now looking for teams of five contestants per episode for the new show, with filming expected to start in Bristol soon.
