Daps or plimsolls? – we could soon get a definitive answer to the age-old question
What do you call them, daps or plimsolls?
It’s an age-old debate that involves a former Bristol MP, Samuel Plimsoll, whose statue stands by the Floating Harbour close to the Jacob’s Wells Road roundabout; and a widely disputed acronym, ‘Dunlop Athletic Plimsoll’.
Now the debate could be settled once and for all via the unlikely form of a bin situated close to the Watershed.
is needed now More than ever
The ‘ballot bin’ is one of two that have been placed in Bristol to settle some age-old scores while also cutting litter.
The pair of bins are part of a litter reduction campaign run by Backwell-based education consultants Sustainable Hive and environmental charity Hubbub, with new questions due to appear in the coming months as the bins move to new locations across the city.

Bristol Waste managing director, Tony Lawless, said: “Keeping Bristol clean and green is at the heart of what we do and the waterways are at the heart of our city.
“We hope visitors to the harbourside get onboard with this fantastic project, which makes disposing of your litter not just easy, but fun and engaging too.”
Hubbub co-founder and director, Gavin Ellis, said that the Treasure Your River campaign “aims to help people make the connection between litter in our towns and cities and plastic in the oceans”.
He added: “We hope to create a legacy for each river taking part in the campaign, by building an army of regular volunteers, litter-clearing equipment and improved ‘binfrastructure’ in towns and cities across the six chosen rivers.”
