Darren Jones demands judge-led inquiry into Leave campaign
Bristol North West MP Darren Jones has demanded a judge-led inquiry into the Leave campaign after criminal investigations were launched into key referendum players including Thornbury-based businessman Arron Banks.
Jones was speaking at Prime Minister’s Question Time in the House of Commons, which on Wednesday saw David Lidington stand in for Theresa May, who is at the NATO summit in Brussels.
“The Information Commissioner has fined Facebook for its involvement in the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the Electoral Commission has concluded that the leave campaign broke electoral law,” Jones said.
“Is now not the time to set up a judge-led inquiry into the Brexit referendum because if the British people have been duped by Brexit shysters they deserve to know about it.”
Responding to Jones’ first ever PMQs question, Lidington said: “Obviously this has only just been published and the government will want to consider the report and its recommendations in detail before responding.”
Lidington, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, added that it was not for ministers to intervene in criminal proceedings.
