Debbonaire calls Johnson a ‘lawbreaker and a liar’

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jun 15, 2023

Thangam Debbonaire has called Boris Johnson a “lawbreaker and a liar” and said that current prime minister Rishi Sunak “has never stood up to him” due to “weakness”.

The Bristol West MP and shadow leader of the house was speaking following the publication of a report by MPs that says Johnson deliberately misled the Commons over lockdown parties at No. 10.

Other opposition MPs have previously been upbraided by the speaker for questioning the former prime minister’s propriety, but Debbonaire was under no such restrictions.

“Boris Johnson lied,” Debbonaire said.

“He lied to MPs. He lied to the people of this country. He lied to doctors, nurses, careworkers, bus drivers, everyone who was putting their own lives at risk during the pandemic.”

She added: “This all brings into question the validity of Johnson’s resignation honours list and the prime minister’s support for it, with a lawbreaker and a liar rewarding his cronies.”
