Delays to fix Kingswood burst water main

By Chris Brown  Monday Sep 29, 2014

Emergency work to gas supplies is delaying efforts to fix a major water main which burst last night in Kingswood, leaving 8,000 homes without water.

Bristol Water said this morning they could not work on the main that burst while Wales and West Utilities carried out work on their nearby pipe.

“It would not be safe for our crew to work on the repair until this work is completed. We do not have an estimate for how long the repair will take until we have access and can start the work,” Bristol Water said.

Water bowsers have been installed in the following places for residents to stock up on fresh water, although reports suggest there are queues forming in the area as people wait for bowsers to arrive:

  • Co-op, 31 Halls Road, Kingswood, BS15 8JE;
  • Co-op, Downend Road, BS16 5UJ;
  • Tesco, 58 Broad Street, Staple Hill, BS16 5NP;
  • Sainsburys. Emerson Way, Emersons Green BS16 7AG;
  • Aspect Leisure Park. Longwell Green BS15 9LA;
  • Customers are advised to bring their own containers to collect water from the bowsers.

Meanwhile, schools cross the area have been closed, including: Kingswood Forest Primary; Kings Oak Academy; Sir Bernard Lovell School; Grange School, Warmley; Beacon Rise Primary; Chester Park Infants School and Chester Park Junior School in Fishponds.

Bristol Water said supplies are likely to be cut off for the rest of Friday after the incident in Kingswood on Thursday afternoon.

Properties across East Bristol including Kingswood, Pucklechurch, Mangotsfield, Oldland Common, Longwell Green, Barrs Court, Keynsham, Stockwood and Whitchurch were hit when the main burst yesterday at about 5pm.

Water supplies to some properties were restored by about 9pm, but damage to the gas main nearby ment work had to stop.

Twenty people were evacuated from their homes by boat. The Red Cross found a church hall for them to stay overnight.

Elsewhere, Cadbury Heath and Kingswood libraries have closed, while Cossham Hospital has also been affected. The NHS Trust has asked people due to attend the hospital to call ahead and check on the latest situation there.
