Derelict hotel could finally be demolished

By Martin Booth  Friday Jan 19, 2024

Notices have appeared around the former Grosvenor Hotel informing passers-by that demolition is in progress.

Nothing appears to be happening yet inside the perimeter fencing but it is the clearest indication so far that the derelict hotel could finally be consigned to the history books.

The building opposite Temple Meads was once one of Bristol’s grandest hotels but has become increasingly dilapidated in recent years.

A serious fire broke out at the hotel in October 2022 with Bristol mayor Marvin Rees confirming that approval had been granted for its demolition in April 2023.

Nothing has happened since then, however, with the site remaining fenced off.

Bristol24/7 has approached Bedminster-based TR Demolition for comment.

Bristol City Council have plans to develop Temple Square, made up of the Grosvenor Hotel site and the old George & Railway Hotel and the land in between, “with a mix of employment space and ground floor uses which will complement (their) ambitions for the wider Temple Quarter regeneration programme”.

A court order from Bristol Magistrates’ Court on November 28 2022 told the owner Nimish Popat of Earlcloud that he had five weeks to either shore up the building with specialist scaffolding or demolish it.
