Discover the beauty of east Bristol
From the wild and craggy Troopers Hill, tranquil Snuff Mills, the majestic Stoke Park and Oldbury Court estates and wonderfully named Magpie Bottom, a new Discover East Bristol map highlights some of the hidden corners and wide open spaces of the area.
“We spent two months researching, collecting information and mapping the area,” says Dave Bain, who led the team of designers and illustrators who created the map and interactive website.
“We walked the entire area and couldn’t believe how many maps there are around that were all different – there was no one ‘go-to’ map for east Bristol showing all its wonderful open, green spaces.”

Back to the drawing board and armed with a plethora of information, photographs and research, the ‘Drawn in Bristol’ team set about creating a map and interactive online version, with a distinctive “clear and simple design which harks back to the 1920s”.
The final map is not only beautiful but functional as well. It details the open spaces, walks, historical facts and amazing wildlife which can be found in east Bristol. The online version can be easily updated by community groups and there are also a selection of beautifully illustrated activity sheet printouts for families and children.
Dave says the map, funded by Bristol 2015 Neighbourhood Arts Project, has been designed to encourage people already living in east Bristol to explore their area more and also to encourage visitors to Bristol to discover the rest of the city.
“People always go to the centre and Clifton but they don’t realise there are other places which they can explore.”
