Don Alexander joins cabinet as Rees relinquishes control of transport portfolio

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jul 8, 2021

Don Alexander has been named as Bristol’s new cabinet member for transport.

The councillor for Avonmouth & Lawrence Weston takes on the role from Marvin Rees, who remains responsible for planning and city design.

Rees loyalist Alexander becomes the eighth member – including the mayor – in the all-Labour cabinet, who earn £21,550 a year on top of their £14,330 councillor salary.

“Don showed during our first term that he’s a councillor who can get things done for the community he represents,” said Rees.

“I’ve asked him to join the cabinet to bring with him that enthusiasm and drive forward our plans to deliver better-connected communities where people have transport options that link them to opportunity.”

Alexander, who lives in Sea Mills and describes himself as an “active bus user”, has previously been a chair of planning at the city council and is a director of the council’s housing company, Goram Homes.

He said: “I’m grateful to the mayor for this opportunity to play a part in delivering his ambitious goals for the city’s transport systems.

“We’re fortunate to have so many eager and talented partners at the table to work with on delivering sustainable and inclusive transport options. I look forward to working with them and residents on turning our ideas into reality.”
