Extinction Rebellion kick off national poster campaign in Bristol

By Lowie Trevena  Friday May 1, 2020

“No Government handouts for destructive big businesses”, is the message from Extinction Rebellion, as the environmental activist group begins its new campaign.

Kicking off the nationwide #NoGoingBack poster campaign in Bristol, the group calls for the Government to prioritise investing in people and sustainable future, instead of “highly polluting, unsustainable” businesses.

The group’s latest campaign sees activists target large corporations appealing for Government money, including Topshop in Cabot Circus and Airbus in Filton.

“Today the government has started handing out bailouts to polluting industries instead of protecting the most vulnerable people,” says Extinction Rebellion activist Anneka Sutcliffe.

“This is not where we want our tax money to go. We need to prioritise people and the planet over profit and pollution.”

The poster campaign comes after UN secretary general Antionio Gutteres, at Petersberg Climate Dialog on Tuesday April 28, said: “Where taxpayers’ money is used to rescue businesses, it must be creating green jobs and sustainable and inclusive growth. It must not be bailing out outdated, polluting, carbon-intensive industries.”

“Another world is possible,” says Anneka. “Even in the midst of this really hard time people have been appreciating the quiet streets and cleaner air and valuing our green spaces more than ever.”

Extinction Rebellion is additionally encouraging people in Bristol applaud local businesses that have helped them to keep going throughout lockdown, and “name and shame” those that “don’t deserve Government handouts”.

Extinction Rebellion have criticised big businesses, such as Arcadia Group’s Topshop

Anneka says: “Everyone should have a say in what kind of world we’ll be returning to after lockdown.

“Let’s learn from this and rebuild in a way that serves people and protects the environment. There is no going back.”
