Fabulous Beasts and where to find them

By Sophie Hunter  Monday Jan 25, 2016

A new game developed in Bristol which sees players precariously balance objects one on top of each other is launching a crowdfunding project hoping to be played on a coffee table near you soon.

Fabulous Beasts was developed with the help of REACT Play Sandbox at the Watershed and then made into a prototype.

It was first previewed last year at The Rooms festival, and founder Alex Fleetwood returned to the Watershed last week to give a Friday lunchtime talk at the Pervasive Media Studios about the game’s inspirations from the wilderness of northern California.

The game involves one to four players balancing various animals and other assorted structures, which are each scanned before they are placed onto a precarious tower which is connected to a tablet.

As the tower develops, so does the unique on-screen eco-system. Building the perfect eco-system is the aim of the game, but when the tower falls the game is over.

Described as being easy to learn but with deep strategy involved, Fabulous Beasts was among the Guardian’s most anticipated video games of 2016 and winner of the IndiCade Technology award 2015.
