Family pays tribute to ‘loving and gentle’ man who died in Lawrence Weston flat

The man who died at the scene of a flat fire in Lawrence Weston on Friday has been named by police as Andrew Groves.

A post-mortem revealed the 47-year-old business owner from Avonmouth died from multiple blows to the head.

Police have confirmed a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

The victim’s family have paid tribute to him, saying: “Andrew was and will always be remembered as a loving, caring, gentle and joyful man.

“He was a dedicated family man who will be sorely missed by family and friends.

“A recognisable face within the local community, Andy spent his life living and working in the area, running his garage – Andy’s Autos in Avonmouth.

“At this present difficult time we would ask everyone to respect our privacy while we begin to come to terms with our devastating loss.”

The emergency services were called to reports of a blaze at the property in Oakhanger Drive at around 11.40pm on Friday (September 29), where the body was found.

Police patrols in the area have been stepped up to give some reassurance to residents.

Police enquiries continue and anyone with information that might assist with the investigation is asked to call 101 and quote the reference 5217223044.
