Felling of historic oak tree is ‘unavoidable’
Bristol City Council have said that the felling of a historic tree in Ashley Down is “unavoidable”.
Following fears from Bristol Tree Forum that the holm oak was chosen to be removed because it was causing cracks in a low wall, the council have confirmed that this is not the case.
A sign on the tree simply gives the reason for its felling as ‘property damage’.
is needed now More than ever
A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “Regrettably, it is unavoidable that we will be removing a Holm Oak tree on Ashley Down Road to protect against further damage occurring to nearby private property.
“This is not connected to an adjacent wall on the public highway.
“The council’s Parks tree team, in consultation with the Housing department, have carefully considered all the options to avoid removal, but it is impossible to alleviate the significant continuing risk posed by the roots of the tree to the adjacent house.
“The removal will take place during the next month with the tree being replaced nearby as soon as possible.”
