Fifth man taken ill over legal high Spice

By Bristol24/7  Monday Feb 8, 2016

A man collapsed in Broadmead after taking a legal high just a week after another man died in Bristol suspected of taking the same substance.

A 43-year-old was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary on Friday after taking Spice, a psychoactive substance which has also led to three other men being taken to hospital in the last two weeks.

Police said they were investigating a link between all five incidents and warned that taking the drug is like “Russian roulette”.

A 49-year-old man was found collapsed in St James’ Park on January 28 and died later.

Paul Bunt, drugs strategy manager at Avon and Somerset police, said: “We’ve seen a number of serious incidents in Bristol and are warning people not to take these so-called legal highs.

“If you take an NPS (new psychoactive substance) you are playing Russian roulette with your health.

“Many of these types of products have not been tested on humans and can contain chemicals which, if consumed, can leave you at a grave risk of suffering serious ill health and can even prove fatal.

“These messages are reinforced by the imminent arrival of the Psychoactive Substances Bill which is due to come into force in April and will make these substances illegal.”

The incidents come as Bristol Drugs Project launches a new Spice support drop-in every Friday in Brunswick Square.
