Fight to save Avonmouth station building
Campaigners have begun a fight to prevent a historic building in Avonmouth from being demolished.
Despite stiff opposition, Network Rail have been given the go-ahead to flatten the last remnants of the Victorian station on the western platform with the building said to be “beyond economic repair”.
Bristol Civic Society and Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways held a rally at the site last week to highlight the threat to the two-storey structure which was most recently used as a barbers.
is needed now More than ever
In a statement, the Civic Society said: “Bristol Civic Society appreciates the concerns raised about the economic viability of repairing this building. It is, however, an interesting architectural feature of the station.
“Bearing this in mind and also the active consideration being given to increased passenger services on the line, the Society urges that all options for saving the building are exhausted before its demolition is undertaken.”
Avonmouth councillor Matt Melias said: “The fact that this lovely building is neither listed, nor within Conservation area, is proving to be a real problem in our efforts to preserve it.
“We have also been concerned that this planning matter has been progressed with absolutely no public consultation through any of the area forums like the Neighbourhood Partnership.”
The proposed demolition can take place at any time over the next five years.
Melias is due to ask George Ferguson at Tuesday’s members’ forum to intervene and explore all options, including procurement, for saving the station.
