Fire breaks out at former funeral parlour
Just over a fortnight since a preservation notice was placed on a former funeral parlour, a serious fire has broken out in the building.
The notice made it illegal for any demolition or alterations to take place at the site on Church Road in Redfield.
But that could be immaterial following the fire on Sunday evening which caused nearby residents to be evacuated from their homes.
is needed now More than ever
A resident of Heber Street, whose houses back on to the rear of the former funeral parlour, told Bristol24/7 that she rang 999 to report the fire at 7.50pm on Sunday.
She and her neighbours were quickly evacuated, with many congregating in Brook Street Park while the cordon remained in place.
“I was in my living room on the second floor and we smelt it first and then saw loads of smoke,” the Heber Street resident told Bristol24/7.
“We could then see loads of flames coming out from the top of the roof. It just got worse and worse.
“There was the sound of crackling and the flames were massive, really big, with the smoke whirling in the sky. It was scary.”
