Fire in Bristol University building started accidentally
A blaze that ripped through the University of Bristol’s Fry Building on Saturday was started accidentally, according to investigators.
Dramatic scenes could be seen across the city, as fire fighters tackled the flames that engulfed the Grade II-listed property, causing extensive damage to the top floor and roof. Thankfully, there were no casualties.

An investigation was immediately launched in the aftermath of the blaze and a statement from Avon Fire and Rescue Service on Monday afternoon has concluded that it was caused by works as part of the building’s £33m refurbishment.
is needed now More than ever
“We know that refurbishment works were being carried out in the roof on Saturday afternoon, which, we believe, has led to the accidental fire starting,” said the service’s group manager, Steve Quinton.
“In any fire investigation, we consider and then rule out all possible causes to arrive at the most likely cause.
“The extent of the damage at Fry Building means we will never be able to identify exactly where the fire started, but we are satisfied it started accidentally as a result of the works taking place that day.”

He praised the work of control staff and fire fighters, whose quick actions prevented further damage.
Fire fighters arrived on the scene six minutes after the first 999 call was made and it took crews from seven engines, two turntable ladders, plus support vehicles to tackle the dramatic blaze.
Quinton also thanked police and ambulance crews, as well as the university, Bristol City Council and members of the public for messages of support.
On Sunday morning, quiet had returned to Woodland Road:
