The person was infected while away in Italy and has been in self-isolation since returning. Public Health England is contacting people who had close contact with them. These individuals will be given health advice about symptoms and emergency contact details to use if they become unwell in the 14 days after contact.
Debra Lapthorne, centre director for Public Health England South West said: “This tried and tested method will ensure we are able to minimise any risk to them and the wider public.”
Christina Gray, director of public health for Bristol City Council, said: “Together with our local health partners, we have been fully prepared for a case of COVID-19 in Bristol. This is not unexpected and we are well equipped to deal with this situation.
“Please be reassured that the risk to the general public remains low and we are working with health colleagues to ensure people in our city are protected and treated if required.
“Good hygiene is the best way to prevent the further spread of the virus, so please regularly wash your hands thoroughly and if you cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.
“If you have recently been to one of the affected areas or have had contact with someone who has and are feeling unwell, you should use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service or call NHS 111 for further advice straight away. Please do not go to your doctor or a hospital unless instructed by a health professional.”
