First houses built by council-owned housing company Goram Homes

By Martin Booth  Thursday Dec 21, 2023

The first finished homes from council-owned housing company Goram Homes have been built on the site of a former school.

Once completed, One Lockleaze next to Stoke Park will contain 268 new homes, more than half of which will be affordable housing.

Buildings will range from one-bed flats to four-bed houses, with Goram Homes hoping to build more than 3,000 homes across Bristol in the coming decade, despite concerns that it lacks details about finances and dates for when homes will be built.

The first of the 94 socially rented council homes at One Lockleaze will be ready to move into by February.

Goram Homes has also worked with the Children’s Services team at Bristol City Council to design a small number of homes at One Lockleaze for children in care.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees recently cut the ribbon to officially mark the milestone at One Lockleaze.

Rees said: “One Lockleaze will be a thriving new neighbourhood, transforming another brownfield site into new homes to tackle the housing crisis.

“Goram Homes can build much higher levels of council or social rented homes than we see at other developments, giving people most in need a safe and secure place to live.

“Our council-owned housing company is well placed to help solve other pressing housing needs, like homes for children in care, as we continue to add to the more than 12,500 new homes already delivered in Bristol since 2016.”

Goram Homes development director, Christiana Makariou, added: “I’m incredibly proud of our first homes, and the fact this partnership has prioritised building affordable at a time when the city needs it most.

“These new homes are thoughtfully designed, packed with sustainable features, and designed to create a community people will love to live in.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming our first new residents very soon.”
