Five years of Wapping Wharf
Just over five years ago, one of Bristol’s most popular areas to visit was still a car park.
A lot has changed since then, with Wapping Wharf developing into a much-loved destination for eating, drinking, shopping and living.
That development continues with CARGO Work currently being built that will soon provide shipping container office space.
is needed now More than ever
A number of traders based at Wapping Wharf spoke to reporter Robin Connolly for a special episode of the Bristol24/7 Behind the Headlines podcast:
Stuart Hatton, managing director, Umberslade
“The independent traders bring a real passion, a drive and a commitment that national companies, in my opinion, don’t have. We’ve built on that community.”
Gary Roper, manager, Little Victories
“In five years, I’ve seen Wapping Wharf develop into a thriving hub that it is now… All the businesses are all doing great things.”
Olly Kohn, co-founder, Pigsty and The Jolly Hog
“I can’t believe it has been five years… I remember standing with a clicker trying to work out how many people were going to cross over the bridge from Bedminster and walk into town. At that point, there was nothing here.”
Dan Heath, owner, The Cider Box
“We wanted to do something new here, bringing fantastic cider from independent producers back to the harbourside… There’s a fantastic community here that we’re pleased and proud to be part of.”
Ben O’Neil, head chef, Jigaraki
“As a Bristolian, it’s great to be working in the heart of Bristol doing what I love doing with like-minded people around me.”
Caroline Gilmartin, owner, Every Good Thing
“It’s the nicest place to work. I have wonderful neighbours on both sides. Incredibly friendly, really supportive, and I provide my fermented foods to Pizzarova and the Jolly Hog.”
Helen Symonds, owner, Frankly
“The support of the community has been incredible… (Wapping Wharf) has really focussed people on shopping locally.”
Katie Kaye, Mokoko
“It’s been an adventure I would say. It’s been really good. We were the first people here so there was nothing around. To watch it all come up has been really cool.”
Graham Faragher, co-owner, Bertha’s Pizza
“It’s a really exciting place to be in Bristol. It feels very continental… We’re very grateful that we’re here and this is our home.”
Rosie Morgan, founder, The Bristol Cheesemonger
“We have been at Wapping Wharf for five years which has gone incredibly quickly. It has been wonderful. We have loved our entire time there and as a business, it has allowed us to grow.”
