Flames seen across city after huge fire at Bristol Uni building

By Bristol24/7  Saturday Jan 6, 2018

A fire which broke out close to the Wills Memorial Building sent flames shooting into the night sky on Saturday evening.

The fire was in the Fry Building, on the corner of Woodland Road and University Road, which was undergoing refurbishment and due to reopen later this year as the University of Bristol’s new maths department.

Nobody is believed to have been injured in the blaze, which sent smoke billowing into the near vicinity including Park Street.

Surrounding roads were closed and nearby buildings including the Wills Building evacuated as fire crews fought the fire, which was eventually put out soon before 8pm.

A helicopter was used to guide jets of water being shot at the flames.

The Fry Building used to house Bristol Uni’s School of Biological Sciences which in July 2014 relocated to the new Life Sciences Building on nearby St Michael’s Hill.

Plans for the reopened Grade II listed building included a new entrance lobby, atrium, courtyard and landscaped terrace.

Saturday’s fire is the second major blaze to break out at a Bristol Uni property in recent years, following a fire which ripped through halls on Colston Street in October 2015.
