Fly-tipping video gets standing ovation

By Louis Emanuel  Tuesday Jul 21, 2015

A video showing the disparity between Easton and Clifton when it comes to fly-tipping and street cleaning led to a standing ovation from councillors.

The one-minute video, titled Tale of Two Cities, was shown in place of a normal written statement to full council.

Labour councillors rose to their feet at the end of the video which spliced images of clean streets in some areas and rubbish piled in the streets in Easton.

The video was made delivered by Hannah Crudgington as part of the #TidyBS5 campaign which has been highlighting the rise in fly-tipping in the BS5 area.

The problem has become so large that a spoof Facebook group was started by locals comparing the rubbish piles to works of contemporary art.

Crudgington added in a supporting statement: “I have made my home and set up my business in Easton of the last 12 years or so.

“It is extremely sad to report that after an initial improvement and vibrancy, the last five years have seen a huge deterioration and this is largely due to ill thought decisions by people without practical experience of the area at grass roots level.”

She added: “Bristol City Council has been made well aware of the issues of waste in BS5 and yet the problems are getting worse. In the last year, it has gone from fly tipping and litter to fly-tipping, litter and a horrendous stench. So it is no longer an annoyance or inconvenience but more a health hazard.

“So what is Bristol City Council doing to resolve this, what are your time scales and finally would you put up with this?”
