Centre fountains to make way for Harbourside Market food traders
Work is currently underway to build a wooden decking over one of the fountains in the centre in order to create a new home for the Harbourside Market.
The market’s move is due to it now being located directly on the route of the cycle path heading from the bottom of Park Street towards Queen Square.
The decking will see the end of the fountains nearest the Cascade Steps; one of three water features which were infamously described by former Venue editor Tom Phillips as “a load of dead men peeing”.
is needed now More than ever

The fountains were switched off during the Metrobus works

The decking is slowly taking shape
Harbourside Market directors faced the end of the market – which now takes place on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday – if they could not find a new location.
The market is due to move to its new purpose-built home by the end of September, with a five-year lease agreed with the city council for the space that will be the home of the market’s street food vendors.
On weekends, the rest of the market occupies the covered walkway starting at No.1 Harbourside and on busy market days going up as far as what was formerly Bordeaux Quay – due soon to transform into Revolucion de Cuba.

Harbourside Market co-director Patrick Holden told Bristol24/7 are excited about the move ahead
Harbourside Market co-director Patrick Holden told Bristol24/7: “The market has grown from being a flea market selling books, records and vintage clothing to a vast and exciting hub for independent artists and vendors and we’ve included a range of local and organic street food stalls since May 2015.
“The square is already a hub for local businesses and cafes, it also provides a walkway between the two sides of the river, so we are excited to be working there.
“We are effectively creating more public space which is great and are getting rid of an unused fountain which wasn’t great and will be saving the council money as a result.”
