Four charged over damage to Colston statue

By Ellie Pipe  Wednesday Dec 9, 2020

Four people have been charged with criminal damage after the statue of Edward Colston was toppled from its plinth and subsequently thrown in the harbour.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed Rhian Graham, 29, Milo Ponsford, 25, Jake Skuse, 32, and Sage Willoughby, 21, will appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on January 25 2021 for their first hearing.

The bronze statue, which was brought down on June 7, was later recovered from the water and assessed to have £3,750 worth of damage. The plan is to put it on display in one of the city’s museums as it was found, complete with graffiti and chunks missing.

The police investigation into the matter has now closed.

Confirming the charges against four people on Wednesday, the CPS said: “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against all four are now active and that they have the right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
