Free coach travel for schoolchildren to ‘world-class’ museum

By Betty Woolerton  Saturday Jan 6, 2024

More children will be able to discover the pivotal role that Bristol played in the history of aviation and the stories of the people who made it happen via a new scheme.

Aerospace Bristol has announced it is offering coach travel bursaries for school trips to the museum in Patchway, with up to £1000 available per school.

“We know the difficulties schools face when planning school trips due to the rising costs of coach travel and we are really pleased to be able to offer this bursary,” said Amy Seadon, head of collections, learning and interpretation.

“Learning is at the heart of Aerospace Bristol and we have seen first-hand how much students enjoy exploring Bristol’s rich aerospace history.

“All key stages can visit the museum, and they’ll be able to experience hands-on curriculum-linked, History and STEM workshops.”

The funding, provided by South Gloucestershire Council, will help the museum in its mission to welcome over 11,000 school students in 2024.

Councillor Ian Boulton, co-leader and cabinet member responsible for schools at South Gloucestershire Council said he was “delighted” by the news.

“When the pressure to fund school trips is so difficult for our teachers, this fund provides an opportunity for an exciting, informative and inspirational visit to this world-class museum on our own doorstep,” he said.

“I have seen myself how school groups are welcomed with interactive teaching sessions while also learning about our region’s rich heritage in aerospace innovation.

“A visit to Aerospace Bristol will undoubtedly ignite interests in science, technology, engineering and maths and inspire potential careers in these exciting local industries.”
