Funding details of new Filton station unknown as first designs revealed
Digital images reveal what a new railway station at Filton’s YTL Arena site might look like.
The company behind plans to build an entertainment complex in and around the historic Brabazon hangars promises the fast-developing area will be the “best-connected in the city” as bosses reiterate a commitment to spending on infrastructure.
Revealing the CGI images on Wednesday, YTL confirmed it will contribute more than £1m towards funding the Filton station – but the details of exactly how much the building will cost and who will foot the rest of the bill remain unknown at this stage.
is needed now More than ever
A planning application for the Filton North station is due to be submitted by Network Rail this month. It is part of the MetroWest phase two project, which also includes new stations at Henbury and Ashley Down, led by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA).
WECA told Bristol24/7 the funds needed for the arena station are currently unknown because permission has not yet been granted and the design is subject to change. £54.163m has been allocated for the entire project set to improve links across the north of the city.

The YTL Arena development is expected to be completed in 2024, with the station due to be operational by 2023, subject to planning. It will mean passengers can travel between the Filton site and Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes.
In April this year, YTL pledged to spend more than £3.1m on improving local transport infrastructure in and around Filton. The company has also signed the Cribbs Patchway New Neighbourhood framework agreement, set out between developers and South Gloucestershire Council, which promises to ensure full funding is in place to deliver the new Filton North station, as well as a dedicated MetroBus that will connect Cribbs Causeway directly to the city centre via the Brabazon hangars site.
The extensive YTL development also includes housing, with the first of the homes already for sale starting from £219,500 for a one-bedroom apartment.

Seb Loyn, director at YTL Developments said: “Investing in public transport and active travel is a key part of the vision to ensure Brabazon becomes a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol.
“With our first homes now selling fast, the new rail station due to be operational by 2023 and then Brabazon Park and the YTL Arena Bristol due to open in 2024, progress is well underway to deliver on that vision.”
YTL says the new station will be “accessible to all”, with step-free access, covered waiting areas on both platforms and dedicated blue-badge parking spaces. There will also be covered cycle parking and CCTV.
