Future of Bearpit bear to be debated by council

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday Nov 14, 2018

Thousands of people have called for Ursa the bear not to be removed from the Bearpit.

With a petition urging Bristol City Council chiefs to halt their plans for the statue’s removal hitting 3,500 signatures, it means that there will now be a council debate on the issue.

“Perhaps now we can have some transparency and this debate can be conducted in the public arena rather than behind closed doors,” said Richard Jones, former vice chair of the Bearpit Improvement Group.

The petition was started by Caitlin Telfer from Stokes Croft, who called the response so far “fantastic”.

She said: “Ursa represents community-led activism, challenging privatisation and securitisation of public space. In such space the most vulnerable people in society are excluded…

“So Bristol, let’s continue to make some noise and have our vision for our city heard!”
