Gearing up for Let’s Ride Bristol 2019

By Ellie Pipe  Thursday Jun 13, 2019

People on two wheels will be taking over the streets of Bristol on Sunday for the return of HSBC UK’s Let’s Ride event.

Riders of all ages are invited to turn out and complete all, or part of, the 4.75km car-free route that goes from Millennium Square, past the Hippodrome and Colston Hall, through the Old City, around past Bristol Old Vic and Queen Square, looping down Prince Street and back to the start.

The free annual celebration of cycling starts at 10.30am and will also feature live stunt shows, music, local street food and activities for the whole family.

Cyclists of all levels and abilities are welcome to join for as much of the route as they choose.

Alongside the ride, there will be two elite cycle races, with the men’s fourth round of the HSBC UK | National Road Series – the Circuit of the Mendips – kicking off at 10.30am.

From 3pm, the first-ever standalone women’s HSBC UK | National Circuit Series begins, with round one – the Bristol Crit – which will consist of five laps of a 1.6km city centre course.

In April, organisers of the elite race – formerly known as the Bristol Grand Prix – pulled the plug in a row with British Cycling over equality in the sport.

The spokesperson for the sport’s governing body told Bristol24/7 at the time that it respected the organisers’ decision and said it would work with the council to deliver a “new vision” for the event.

The elite men’s 155km race is expected to finish at around 2pm and the women’s circuits at around 4pm.

Last year’s Let’s Ride event had a record attendance of some 8,000 people. Sunday’s event is free but participants are advised to register via: www.letsride.co.uk/events/bristol.
