Goldfish surgery in Bristol goes ‘swimmingly’

By Louis Emanuel  Monday May 11, 2015

Veterinary surgeons in Bristol performed a delicate 45-minute operation to a remove a tumour from a pet goldfish.

Five-year-old Monty went under general anaesthetic for the £200 procedure in which its eye was also removed.

Vets used water soluble anaesthetic to knock the goldfish out and flushed oxygenised water through its gills while the fish was on the operating table.

Sonya Miles, exotics veterinary surgeon at Highcroft Veterinary Group, said the operation at Whitchurch Veterinary Hospital had gone “swimmingly”.

“He was a brilliant patient and the surgery went very smoothly from start to finish,” she said.

“We don’t perform surgery on Goldfish very often but we are seeing a definite increase in veterinary treatment in fish generally.

“Monty is doing exceptionally well at home and is acting as if nothing has even happened.”
