Green Party by-election candidate says he is ‘proud of Southmead’s community’
Expect red and green rosettes to be familiar sights on the streets of Southmead for the next couple of weeks.
On February 17, a by-election in the ward could see the Green Party overtake Labour to have the most councillors in Bristol; while a win for Labour would see a former cabinet member back in City Hall.
Labour have got out of the blocks in BS10 more quickly, with Kye Dudd already announced as their candidate; with the Greens now announcing that Ed Burnham will fight Dudd for the seat.
is needed now More than ever
Burnham grew up and still lives in Southmead, and works as an engineer in Filton.
As a local activist, he has campaigned to keep green spaces accessible to the public and pushed for more sustainable development in Glencoyne Square.
“I’m standing for council because I’m proud of Southmead’s community and believe they deserve a councillor who will work hard for them above all else,” Burnham said at his campaign launch.
“I’m also deeply concerned about community services being affected by millions of pounds of cuts in this month’s budget – just two days after the by-election.”
Burnham added: “Significant cutbacks on staff investment in an already strained workforce will surely result in poorer quality frontline services.
“While Labour councillors will be told to vote this through without scrutiny. Southmead needs a local independent voice who will fight to protect local services.
“I am proud to be standing for the Green Party, who do not tell their councillors how to vote, and stand up for my community.”
