Gym closed ahead of shopping centre redevelopment

By Charlie Watts  Friday May 27, 2022

A gym has closed ahead of the proposed redevelopment of a shopping centre in south Bristol.

énergie Fitness is part of Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Knowle, which is due for a £150m revamp.

The shopping centre’s owners say closing the gym is not an action they have taken lightly.

But the gym has said it was given “no notice whatsoever” about its closure and this has come as “a big shock” to staff.

“There has been a misunderstanding concerning the lease terms for the premises in regards to the redevelopment of Broadwalk,” the gym said in a statement earlier in the month.

“Solutions to this are being looked at however it is unlikely this will be resolved in a matter of days.

“We cannot stress enough how heartbreaking this is for us, especially after years spent trying to improve and be a part of this community.”

A spokesperson for Broadwalk Shopping Centre added: “We have tried everything in our power to work with the tenant to find a resolution.

“We have a responsibility to all our other tenants and local people to run a financially sound shopping centre. We hope to resolve this situation quickly.”

Bristol24/7 has been unable to get a response from the gym to the shopping centre’s statement.

It is also unclear at this stage whether a gym will be part of the redevelopment of Broadwalk Shopping Centre, which could be given the go-ahead later this year.
