Gym to be turned into new bowling alley

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 7, 2021

Ten more lanes of ten-pin bowling could be coming soon to Bristol city centre.

The new bowling alley is from Roxy Lanes, whose other premises across the UK also include pool tables, table tennis, shuffleboards, beer pong, karaoke booths, arcade machines and even crazy golf.

Currently located in Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham, Roxy have plans to open six new sites in 2022.

Roxy Leisure was founded in 2013 with the opening of Roxy Ball Room on Boar Lane in Leeds.

The first Roxy Lanes opened on Bond Street in Leeds in 2014, with the team describing themselves as “professionals at play who bring the playground to the bar”.

Roxy is following in the footsteps of Lane 7 in the Harbourside, which opened a new bowling alley on Millennium Promenade earlier this year.

Roxy Lanes have applied to open as late as 2.30am on Friday and Saturday nights within the former Fitness4Less gym on Union Street.

The second floor space is situated above Wilko, with the entrance part of a distinct curved building overlooking the bridge over Fairfax Street.

Fitness4Less did not open since closing at the start of the first lockdown, with the 1,683sq m space advertised to rent for £175,000 per year.

In an update to gym members, Fitness4Less operations manager Steve Bradley wrote: “To secure our future it has been necessary that we gain the support of our partners and landlords and agree on a way forward with them.

“In the case of Bristol, unfortunately, this has not been possible and therefore our business here is not commercially sustainable in these uncertain times.

“This was not an easy or quick decision for the team, however, it was a necessary move to help us focus on the future of the remaining branches.”
