Helen Godwin to stand down from cabinet

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Aug 31, 2021

Bristol’s cabinet member for women, families and children is resigning from the role in order to join a global accountancy firm’s consulting business where she will specialise in government and health.

Helen Godwin, who unsuccessfully stood to be Labour’s West of England metro mayor candidate, will remain as a councillor for Southmead when she joins PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Her departure will leave a cabinet member role to be filled, with Bristol mayor Marvin Rees now having six cabinet members in charge of specialist portfolios, and retaining responsibility himself for planning and city design.

Godwin said: “To be part of Marvin’s cabinet and to have played a role in championing Bristol’s children for the past five years has been a joy and a privilege.

“I am immensely proud of the work we have done to improve children’s services including recognition for our foster carers and working to secure better outcomes and opportunities for our children in care.”

Rees praised Godwin “for the commitment, professionalism and integrity she has brought to the cabinet”.

He added: “She has put excellence and compassion at the heart of all she has done, and shown tremendous energy in delivering for women, young people and families in Bristol.

“She put her deeply held values front and centre to her role as one of our city leaders.”
