Help needed for victims of child sexual abuse in Bristol

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Oct 27, 2017

Demand for therapy for child sexual abuse victims is at an all-time high in Bristol, according to a charity supporting survivors trying to rebuild their lives.

The Green House uses art and drama to help people overcome the trauma they have experienced and, with more than 100 referrals each year and another 35 on the waiting list, desperately needs to expand its capacity to keep up with the growing need.

The charity, which is currently based in St Werburghs, has been working with sexual abuse victims for more than 30 years and is in the process of buying St Agnes Lodge in St Paul’s from Bristol City Council to achieve this goal.

It has launched its first ever public crowdfunding campaign to create a new children’s therapy room that will mean hundreds more young people will be able to access the support they need.

“When children bravely come forward for help, it is vital that we are here to support them,” says Michelle Windle, director of The Green House.

“This dedicated facility will help to rebuild the lives of hundreds of children in Bristol.”

The NSPCC estimates that one in 20 children have experienced sexual abuse, the equivalent of a child in every Bristol classroom, yet there is no national statutory funding for those affected.

With overwhelming demand and long waiting lists, children currently have to wait at least six months to get the support they desperately need and The Green House is asking for public support to change this.

The charity will move to St Paul’s in 2018 and the planned children’s room will enable around 40 per cent more people to access help.

A total of £10,000 is needed to renovate and equip the new therapy room. Every penny of the £5,000 crowdfunder target will go towards it’s refurbishment costs and the campaign is supported by Comic Relief, who have pledged to match fund every donation to the campaign.

Billy Dann, grants digital innovation manager for Comic Relief, said: “We are delighted to support the fantastic work of The Green House.

“This is an exciting opportunity for people to support a local organisation making a vital difference to children in Bristol.”
