Historic church spire stabilised before repairs can take place

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Aug 17, 2022

Funds will need to be raised before St John on the Wall church can be reopened.

Investigative works at the centuries-old church by its owners, the Churches Conservation Trust, has shown part of the spire to be unstable.

As Bristol24/7 first reported, the church is now closed and there is an exclusion zone around the building which connects Broad Street to Quay Street.

A conservation team from the Churches Conservation Trust has taken temporary measures to stabilise the spire and mitigate any immediate risks.

A CCT spokesperson said: “We understand this may be disappointing to visitors, however, we are working with contractors and specialists to ensure that we can raise the necessary funds to make the repairs and to open the church again as soon as possible…

“Following a period of monitoring, we have become concerned about the structural stability of the top of the spire, CCT is therefore conducting further investigation to identify causes and the best approach to the repairs.”
