Historic England exhibition on Millennium Sq
A selection of photographs from the Historic England archive have gone on display in Millennium Square.
The exhibition features highlights from a book, Picturing England, the front cover of which features a photograph of the junction of medieval roads Steep Street and Trenchard Street in Bristol taken in 1866 a few years before roadworks irrecoverably changed the scene.

The book is drawn from the collection of an estimated nine million photographs.
“Embarrassingly, one of those I’d never seen before has made the cover of our book, an early photograph of Bristol – a platinum print, so the silvery tones and the detail are really marvellous,” co-author Mike Evans told the Guardian.
“What fascinates me, because the detail is so pin-sharp is the sign in the shop window, ‘hair bought’ – that must so often have been a last resort for people who were really poor in Bristol.”
