Holocaust Memorial Day: Bristol remembers
“It is not just about remembrance, it is about remembering everything – the tragedy, the inhumanity, the resistance and the survivors courage,” said Valerie Russell Emmott, from the Bristol Holocaust Memorial committee.
She was speaking as Bristol held a commemoration event to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Bristol was one of 70 cities across the UK chosen to light a candle of hope to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. Community and multi-faith leaders from across the city attended the ceremony at the MShed.
is needed now More than ever
But today’s event is not just about remembering events 70 years ago.
“We are trying to commemorate, celebrate and educate by bringing everyone together in unity,” said Emmott.
She added: “Bristol is a city of sanctuary and offering refugees a home is as important today as it was all those years ago.
“2015 is a really significant year…it is the start of something and we are asking audiences today to reflect and ask themselves what can I do?”
Bristol is hosting a series of events throughout the year to educate people about the horrors of the the Holocaust.
