Homes across city without water as burst main also causes flood

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 13, 2022

A car was left half-submerged under Brunel Way, and homes and businesses across Bristol left without water after a water main burst near Greville Smyth Park.

Torrents of water gushed down roads and steps as fire crews tried to contain the flooding.

A pump was due to arrive soon after 4pm to clear some of the water; with multiple road closures causing lengthy tailbacks.

At 4.52pm, Bristol Water reported that they “have successfully isolated the burst main and that the vast majority of customers will shortly be returning to supply over the next few hours”.

“We are still working quickly with emergency services to restore supplies and minimise disruption as much as possible.”

Both Clift House Road and Coronation Road were closed, with drivers advised to avoid the Jessops Underpass and the surrounding areas.

The burst main caused water supplies to be affected in areas some miles away including Gloucester Road and Montpelier.

Closer areas to the main both north and south of the river also did not have water including Cliftonwood and Totterdown.
