Homes without water as burst main causes supply outage

By Mia Vines Booth  Tuesday Jun 20, 2023

A burst water main has left homes without water on late Tuesday morning.

St Michael’s Hill remained partially closed at around 9am, with crime scene tape closing off an area of the road where huge slabs of road have split on impact.

The steep road is round the corner from Bristol Children Hospital, where debris from the burst main could be seen strewn across the surrounding area.

Bristol Water is at the scene as engineers try to repair the burst main.

A spokesperson for Bristol Water said: “We are aware of a burst main on St Michael’s Hill and our crew are on site now.”

“You may experience low pressure/no water whilst our team work hard to fix the burst.

“The road is currently closed for safety so we would advise that any commuters avoid the area and find an alternative route.”

A number of houses in the area have been left without water. A Bristol Water worker said around 70 homes had partial to no water supply.

Local councillor Mohamed Makawi has tweeted to say there is “no water supply for most of BS6” in the Kingsdown and Cotham areas of the city.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service was also called out to the incident earlier today. A spokesperson for the fire service says the issue has been handed back to the water board.
