Huge cranes show scale of new Bath Road development

By Martin Booth  Monday Jan 25, 2021

If you were not previously aware of the size of a new development on Bath Road, the erection of two cranes over the weekend now give a clear sense of its enormous scale.

Totterdown Reach will contain 152 homes with commercial properties on the ground floor.

The Totterdown Reach scheme was granted planning permission in 2019 – CGI: Hadley Property Group

Built on the site of a former boat builder on the River Avon that most recently was a petrol station and car wash, the most noticeable aspect of the development is a 15-storey tower block, which was granted permission despite claims it breached Bristol City Council’s own planning policies.

Developers Hadley Property Group admitted that their proposals “will result in substantial changes which will transform the visual character” of the surrounding area.

However, they said that “these are judged, overall, to be beneficial on the basis of the high quality proposals and the poor condition of the existing site”.

Designed by Bath-based architects Feilden Clegg Bradley, the development close to Totterdown Bridge will contain a minimum of 30 per cent affordable housing, according to Hadley.
