The importance of Disconnect Day
A Bristol digital agency is marking the longest day of the year on Thursday by having a digital detox as part of what they are calling Disconnect Day.
Soto, based in the Paintworks, hope to highlight why it’s important to switch off from your devices once in a while.
Disconnect Day aims to encourage people to ditch their electronic devices for any period of time, from just 30 minutes to the full 24 hours.
is needed now More than ever
“Why would a digital agency ask people to ditch their devices? That’s a good question,” says Soto founder and owner Zoey O’Neill.
“We love digital, but we think taking time away from screens is really important as part of a healthy balance between work, nature and modern life.”
Disconnect Day has currently racked up more than 680 pledged hours of disconnect time, the equivalent of 28 straight days.
Zoey adds: “Whilst digital is in our nature, we think it’s really important to strike a balance with all the elements of your life.
“We felt that launching Disconnect Day was a great way to demonstrate that we’re committed to our values. It’s more than agile working or flexible working, it’s actively taking time away from screens to breathe, relax and really enjoy the natural world.”
There is increasing evidence that an over-reliance on technology can be detrimental to both mental and physical health, with too much screen time potentially leading to poor sleep, anxiety, depression, headaches and more.
In the modern age, it’s likely that the majority of workers rely on technology to do their jobs, but periods of disconnection actually lead to happier, healthier workers in the long run.
Constant multitasking can decrease work quality, and researchers at Kansas State University have found that we need downtime after work to mentally recharge for the next day.
