Incredible Edible set to spread its roots
Community-led, fresh produce initative Incredible Edible have just received £400,000 of National Lottery funding.
After starting out in 2007 as a small group of friends who wanted to improve their local community, Incredible Edible have grown from a local food-growing project to have 100 groups across the UK and many more around the world.
With a passion for fresh food, Bristol’s own Incredible Edible Bristol group have successfully filled our city’s unused spaces with herb gardens, community plots and urban food trails, as more and more people are encouraged to make use of the landscape.

Now into its second decade, this urban food project want to continue expanding their network of Incredible Edible groups across the UK, and our very own Bristol group will play a part in this growth.
The plans include launching a project called Roots and Branches, which will be ongoing for the next two years. Groups from across the UK will act as ‘beacons’ to new groups, sharing experiences to promote as much learning as possible. With plans in place to create a central, online hub for groups to share insights, Incredible Edible Bristol will become part of a larger network of support.
With the largest funder of community activity in the UK backing their plans, £400,000 of National Lottery funds certainly sets UK urban spaces on a path towards a greener future.

Co-founder, Pam Warhurst, said of the news: “I am thrilled at this development. We ‘learn’ as we ‘do’ – that has always been our philosophy. Never before has the need to understand local food and build confident communities been so pressing. I am delighted that the Big Lottery Fund has seen our model and chosen to support us in this work of sharing and growing.”
Sara Venn from Incredible Edible Bristol added: “To be rooted locally and connected national with the other ‘beacons’, gives us a great chance to support many others to grow as we have. To grow people as well as plants.”
