Infamous Stokes Croft Tesco applies for permission to sell alcohol for first time
The Tesco at the centre of the Stokes Croft riots is once again applying for an alcohol licence.
The shop on Cheltenham Road has never sold alcohol after Bristol City Council refused them a licence in the months before they opened in 2011 due to concerns from police and residents that it would not help the area’s ongoing problems.
Days after the Tesco Express did open, Stokes Croft and Cheltenham Road erupted into violence, with a second protest a week later also seeing both police and protesters injured after rocks and missiles were thrown, and the cycle shop next door damaged.
is needed now More than ever
The riots – prompted by a police raid on the squat opposite the shop known as Telepathic Heights – were the culmination of a long campaign against the opening of the Tesco on Cheltenham Road.
Campaigners were later granted the right to apply for a judicial review into Tesco being granted planning permission to open.
Tesco are applying to sell alcohol in the Cheltenham Road shop seven days a week from 7am to 11pm.
The application was submitted on December 15, with comments needing to be sent to the city council by January 12 2021.
