‘Interactive light installation’ replaces Christmas tree this year on College Green
An artwork called Cityscape that a Bristol City Council cabinet member has likened to a collection of guillotines has been erected in the middle of College Green.
The “interactive light installation” has replaced the traditional Christmas tree usually located in the middle of the circular seating area close to the Marriott Royal hotel.
Writing on Twitter, Paul Smith, cabinet member for housing, whose Central ward starts the other side of College Green, said: “I can’t be the only one wondering when the executions will be starting.”

Smith’s tweet has since been ‘liked’ by Kevin Slocombe, head of the mayor’s office at City Hall.
Bristol City Centre BID have brought the installation to College Green in collaboration with The Photon Factory, Team Love and Shape Studio.
The BID is the business improvement district for an area stretching from the Harbourside to the Clifton Triangle, which is funded by levy-paying businesses it.
The aim of the sculptures is to allow visitors to “create their own unique sensory experience that mirrors the thriving creativity of Park Street and the wider city centre area”.
The nine sculptures have been designed to mimic a city skyline, with each sculpture featuring a motion sensor light bar that reacts to a person moving through it and creates a record of each person’s movement.
The sculptures then replicate the path that the previous person took, leaving an imprint of their visit.
Keith Rundle from Bristol City Centre BID said: “This is the first time College Green has been transformed during the winter months in this way.
“We’re grateful to Bristol Cathedral and to the city council for allowing this exciting project to take pride of place on College Green. We hope it will bring light and fun for everyone in our city to enjoy through December.”
Team Love, festival and event production specialists behind the likes of Love Saves the Day and The Downs festival, are overseeing the project and hope to take it on tour after it leaves College Green in the new year.
